Help a First-Time Salon Client Prepare for an Appointment

Give new clients useful, low-pressure guidance about what to bring, what to share, and how to find the salon before their first visit.

A first appointment can feel uncertain when a client does not know what the salon expects. A short preparation guide can answer practical questions without suggesting that there is one correct way to arrive or that a client must know salon terminology.

Share arrival details before the day

Explain the entrance, suite or floor, parking or transit options the salon can verify, and what to do if the client cannot find the location. Include any check-in step and a way to contact the salon during business hours. If arrival instructions vary by appointment or provider, make that clear rather than publishing one route that may not fit every booking.

Invite the client to describe their goal

Encourage clients to bring a few reference images if they have them, and to explain what they like about each one. Ask them to mention practical preferences, such as how much time they want to spend styling at home. Make clear that reference photos start a conversation; they do not guarantee an identical result because people, starting points, and preferences differ.

Explain what information is useful

Tell clients which details help the stylist prepare, such as the service they booked, previous color work they choose to share, or a change in their plans. Keep questions relevant to the service and let clients know they can discuss personal preferences directly with their provider. Do not ask for sensitive information through an ordinary booking form unless it is truly needed and handled appropriately.

Clarify booking changes and questions

Point to the salon's current rescheduling, late-arrival, and cancellation information, using the policy the business actually follows. State how a client can ask about suitability, timing, or a service change before the appointment. Avoid promising that a requested change can always be accommodated. A clear route for questions is more reassuring than a long list of rules.

Key points

  • Give precise, verified arrival and contact instructions.
  • Treat reference photos as conversation starters, not promises.
  • Ask only for information relevant to preparing the service.
  • Link to the salon's actual booking-change process.
